The examination of the complex cell biology of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum usually relies on the time‐consuming generation of transgenic parasites. Here, metabolic labeling and click chemistry are employed as a fast transfection‐independent method for the microscopic examination of protein S‐palmitoylation, an important post‐translational modification during the asexual intraerythrocytic replication of P. falciparum. Applying various microscopy approaches such as confocal, single‐molecule switching, and electron microscopy, differences in the extent of labeling within the different asexual developmental stages of P. The Integrated Information Theory of consciousness (IIT) claims that consciousness is identical to maximal integrated information, or maximal Φ. One objection to IIT is based on what may be called the intrinsicality problem: consciousness is an intrinsic property, but maximal Φ is an extrinsic property; therefore, they cannot be identical. In this paper, I show that this problem is not unique to IIT, but rather derives from a trilemma that confronts almost any theory of consciousness. Given most theories of consciousness, (...) the following three claims are inconsistent. INTRINSICALITY: Consciousness is intrinsic. NON-OVERLAP: Conscious systems do not overlap with other conscious systems (a la Unger’s problem of the many). REDUCTIONISM: Consciousness is constituted by more fundamental properties (as per standard versions of physicalism and Russellian monism). In view of this, I will consider whether rejecting INTRINSICALITY is necessarily less plausible than rejecting NON-OVERLAP or REDUCTIONISM. I will also consider whether IIT is necessarily committed to rejecting INTRINSICALITY or whether it could also accept solutions that reject NON-OVERLAP or REDUCTIONISM instead. I will suggest that the best option for IIT may be a solution that rejects REDUCTIONISM rather than INTRINSICALITY or NON-OVERLAP. (shrink)

Recent judicial rulings and changes in federal and state legislation have given for-profit corporations a growing list of rights and constitutional protections, including the right to practice religion free from many types of federal or state restriction. In this paper, we highlight the implications of these developments using Rawls’ Theory of Justice to explore the consequences of for-profit corporate religious freedom for consumers and employees. We identify preliminary principles to spark a discussion as to how expanding religious freedom for businesses (...) and fair access to goods and services can coexist in the for-profit marketplace. Актуальність дослідження інформаційно-комунікацйних технологій як чинника розвитку управлінської культури обумовлена становленням інформаційного суспільства, цифрових технологій та цифрової освіти. Мета дослідження – концептуалізація інформаційно-комунікаційних технологій як чинник розвитку управлінської культури та їх вплив на розвиток культури керівника. Аналіз останніх досліджень і публікацій, з яких започатковано розв’язання даної проблеми і на які спирається авторка. Для аналізу ми виділяємо публікації В.Андрущенка, В. Беха, Ю. Бех, В. Воронкової, О. Кивлюк, В. Нікітенко, М. Максименюк, Р. Олексенка, О. Пунченка, О. Сосніна, що дозволяють нам проникнути в (...) сутність інформаційно-комунікаційних технологій як чинника розвитку управлінської культури та підготовки управлінської еліти. Серед зарубіжних джерел виокремлено роботи М.Кастельса, Й. Масуди, О.Тоффлера, що покладено в основу аналізу інформаційного суспільства та виявлення його проблем.. Формування цілей статті: виявити сучасний стан суспільно-економічного розвитку, що характеризується небаченими темпами розбудови нового інформаційно-комунікаційного облаштування суспільства і розбудови його як інформаційного забезпечення; дослідити, що інформація і знання стали величезним багатством, нематеріальним активом розвитку націй і держав; сформувати принципи створення системи підготовки кадрового потенціалу у контексті розвитку інформаційного суспільства, до розвитку якого мають бути залучені інформаційно-комп’ютерні технології. Методологія дослідження - виокремлено загальнонаукові методи та методи конструктивної методології, що застосовуються до аналізу управлінських наук. В економічній, соціологічній, соціально-філософській літературі методи конструктивної методології є малодослідженими. Наукова новизна дослідження – у застосуванні конструктивної методології, яка свідчить про те, що управлінські науки – це науки праксеологічної спрямованості, що направлені на формування управлінської культури інформаційного суспільства. Результати дослідження. Розкрито сутність інформаційної компетентності, яку розуміють як здатність знаходити інформацію за допомогою сучасних технічних засобів, а також зберігати, переробляти і застосовувати її; проаналізовано проблеми використання інформаційного ресурсу і творчих можливостей громадян як інвестиційного ресурсу розвитку країни; розроблено практичні рекомендації удосконалення напрямів розвитку інформаційно-комунікаційних технологій як головного мегатренду інформаційного суспільства. Висновок – розроблено практичні рекомендації, що сприяють удосконаленню напрямів інформаційно-комунікаційних технологій як головного мегатренду підготовки управлінської еліти інформаційного суспільства. To understand the goals of communist education and shaping of the human being we need deep study of human activity.

Johann Friedrich Ludwig Schröder (1774-1845 ) was born in Germany but moved to Holland at the age of 13. After studying at Halle he joined the Kantian movement in Amsterdam as an active member, cooperating with Paulus van Hemert and contributing articles to his Kantian magazine. During his professional career as a marine instructor (1803-11 ), however, he became increasingly critical of Kantianism. As professor of mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Utrecht (1816-44) he traded in his former (...) Kantianism for a variant of the common sense philosophy then in favour in the Netherlands. He now regarded Kantianism as a form of scepticism. Accordingly, in his major work, the Contnbution to a Critique of the Truth of Human Knowledge, he propounds an anti-sceptical doctrine of such ‘basic truths’ as are founded on the immediate relevation of our consciousness. Schröder also attempts to reduce the Kantian doctrine of the noumenon to an inconsistent set of propositions, by showing them to be antinomies in the Kantian sense of the term, even using Kant's own dialectical method in proving their contradictoriness ; these contradictory propositions he calls the 'antinomies of the Kantian philosophy'. In a minor work, The Sign Relation as the Basis of Human Knowledge (translated freely), we find reminiscences of Thomas Reid's Inquiry into the Human Mind: of the doctrine of sensations suggesting our conceptions of things, of causes being the signs of their effects, of 'the natural language of mankind'. Schröder, in developing these ideas in his own way, presents the sign relation as being fundamental to the construction of our knowledge of both nature and the human soul. Only by taking one thing as the ‘sign’ (signal, symbol, symptom, index, expression, picture, representation etc.) of another can we attain a conception of the world as a coherent whole. Our perception of this relation is partly a matter of innate capacities, partly the result of acquired skill. (shrink)

Synaesthesia is a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces photisms, i.e. mental percepts of colours. R is a 20 year old colour blind subject who, in addition to the relatively common grapheme-colour synaesthesia, presents a rarely reported cross modal perception in which a variety of visual stimuli elicit aura-like percepts of colour. In R, photisms seem to be closely related to the affective valence of stimuli and (...) typically bring out a consistent pattern of emotional responses. The present case study suggests that colours might be an intrinsic category of the human brain. We developed an empirical methodology that allowed us to study the subject's otherwise inaccessible phenomenological experience. First, we found that R shows a Stroop effect (delayed response due to interference) elicited by photisms despite the fact that he does not show a regular Stroop with real colours. Secondly, by manipulating the colour context we confirmed that colours can alter R's emotional evaluation of the stimuli. Furthermore, we demonstrated that R's auras may actually lead to a partially inverted emotional spectrum where certain stimuli bring out emotional reactions opposite to the normal ones. These findings can only be accounted for by considering R's subjective colour experience or qualia. Therefore the present paper defends the view that qualia are a useful scientific concept that can be approached and studied by experimental methods. (shrink)

This paper described a formal theory of type judgments for propositional logic notations of PM; I felt the need of my own automated type checker to check their examples. The type checker I wrote did indeed serve to help me referee the paper, but also took a rather different approach to notation and typing for propositional functions of PM, which proved worth writing up independently in our own paper: Holmes, M.
